Google will begin to scan in the year 2011 in Bavaria and is expected to be completed within six years. It's just that Google will not have exclusive rights to the books already scanned it. Later, all these collections can be accessed through the site ONB in www.onb.ac.at, Google Books Library at books.google.fr, as well as cantonal Europe in www.europeana.eu.
Google has been scanning millions of books to make digital libraries and online bookstores. Unfortunately, projects like this are often blocked the controversy of copyright, anti-trust and privacy issues.
Calculate a count, Google has been scanning 12 million books from 40 libraries, including Stanford University and Harvard in the U.S., and also the University of Rome and Florence in Italy.
